Discord: Everything you need to know
At Hive Kids, students are encouraged to be independent, take charge of their own work, and are able to contact their tutor when they need further help. One of the tools we use to empower our kids to do this is Discord!
Discord is an instant messaging social platform. Users have the ability to communicate with voice calls, video calls, text messaging, media and files in private chats or as part of communities called “servers”.
Our Hive Kids server is private, and is monitored very closely by myself. Only our students are allowed to join.
How we use discord
- Students send their weekly work to their tutor through discord (unless their course utilises google docs)
- Students are able to ask their tutor questions about the work, and request additional support wherever needed.
- Students are able to add other kids as friends in the Hive Kids group.
- Students are sent updates about classes, work, and homework club!
Key points to be aware of
- A “server” is simply a virtual room, as it were. The Hive Kids server simply describes the group of rooms activated and run by myself, including the main chat group. Just because they have access to my server, doesn’t mean they have automatic access to any other server on Discord.
- Users can add other users as friends, so please use the article below to ensure your child has privacy settings active. As long as they are in place, nobody can add your child as a friend without their consent.
- Users can join other servers. Many of these are innocent and friendly, but some are on a wide variety of topics. Please ensure your child knows not to join a server without your approval.
- Users cannot be added to servers without their consent, so nobody can add your child to a server without their consent. They essentially have to search for other servers through the discovery tab, so if they simply log on and click only on the Hive Kids server, they won’t even be shown other servers, and won’t be shown servers that aren’t accessible to children.
- When used correctly, Discord is an amazing opportunity for us to chat to other witnesses in a way we wouldn’t be able to do otherwise, so please encourage your child to share and chat within the Hive Kids server.
Ensure your settings are safe!
The article below demonstrates how you can ensure you have the correct settings in place for your/your child’s account. Please get in touch if you have any other questions.
