Courses

Hive Kids courses help your kids develop the skills they’ll need for GCSE English, in a way they’ll enjoy.

We offer 6-week English courses that include a 90-minute lesson each week, several hours of additional activities, and personal feedback on submitted work.

The tutor, Charlie, sets a curriculum based on the requirements for English GCSE, and creates exciting cross-curricular activities based on specific works of fiction or non-fiction. The courses develop your child’s English language skills, social skills, and time-management skills in a way they’ll enjoy and get excited about. Plus, classes are made up of a just few children, to ensure your child has plenty of space to contribute.

In their 90-minute weekly classes, our kids engage together in an analysis of English texts, and learn specific techniques that they’ll need should they choose to take English GCSE exams. The classes encourage kids to think critically and engage with other children, while also developing their comprehension skills. Even if you choose not to pursue formal GCSE qualifications, we teach a variety of skills that help kids succeed whatever their path may be.

What do our courses include?

Detailed study of an age-appropriate work of fiction or non-fiction

For each 6-week course, we choose an age-appropriate work of fiction or non-fiction that will ignite your child’s imagination and engage them intellectually. We will get together with each hive group once a week to lead them in discussion about parts of the text. We focus on key English language and literature skills they should be developing. Unlike the formal classroom setting, our groups will be relaxed and accommodating to all learning styles.

It can be difficult for busy parents to know what work to set, which is why we provide 3-4+ hours of work for our Hive Kids to complete independently each week based around the texts we are studying. Your child can approach this in a way that suits their learning style and ability, and put as much time in as your schedule allows. We’ll then provide feedback on the work that’s submitted, so your child knows that they’re heading in the right direction.

A ready-made community

Even when you are confident that home educating is the best choice for your child, there are still challenges, like making sure they get plenty of social interactions with other kids at the same stage as them. Hive kids are given plenty of opportunities to collaborate with each other both within the lessons and independently. We encourage all our kids to share their thoughts and observations, even when those thoughts contradict each other, allowing them to grow, and see things from another perspective.

Our own private supervised Discord server allows children to interact with each other if they desire, getting feedback and sharing ideas and work. Even if your child is a little shy, knowing they are part of a team can do wonders for their self-esteem and motivation.

Cross-curricular activities

We all know that children learn best, when they don’t know they’re learning at all. We also know that home educating can be challenging, especially when you are not sure where to start or what work to set. While our courses are English focused, we provide around 3-4+ hours per week of cross-curricular and specific activities that engage our children in a range of subjects. Depending on the course and ability of the class, these can include art, history, geography, creative writing, physical activities and more!

What’s more, we ensure our activities are engaging, fun, and cater to a wide range of interests. Our cross-curricular activities aim to ignite your child’s love of learning again, by allowing them to express their thoughts in mediums that are familiar and exciting to them.

Reading is a conversation. All books talk. But a good book listens as well.
